2014 Curling Funspiel

Another successful Advocis Curling Funspiel took place on March 7th @ the North Hill Curling Club. Besides being a newly renovated facility, the staff was great, making themselves available for any last minute changes or accommodations we needed. The food was abundant and very tasty. All in all a great venue. We will definitely go back in 2015. Our numbers were down a bit from last year, but it was still an exceptional day of friendly competition and camaraderie.

The winner of the event with 44 points was the team “We Swept with Your Wife” consisting of Brent Wisby, Darryl Stinn, Derek Gustauvson and Paul Pinel. Congrats gentlemen!! The coveted “Skippy” Trophy will reside at the offices of RBC until next year.

Our other winners included:

- Second Place- Caine Mutiny with a score of 33

- Third Place – Canada Life with a score of 32

- Fourth Place – Standard Life Rocks with a score of 27

- Fifth Place – SSQ with a score of 26

- Sixth Place – L & Y Guys with a score of 22

- Our Most Honest Award went to The Sun Lifers

At the cocktail party we raffled off a BBQ, TV and a Kobo, raising $830.00 for our charity, Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre.

We had one minor fall incident and the staff at the Curling Club were swift in assisting this individual off the ice, and ensuring he was uninjured and able to continue playing. Thank you.

During the day we surveyed players about the lower numbers and possible reasons. The consensus was that many people left for holidays after the RRSP season. It's likely that our never-ending brutal winter drove some of our usual participants away as well. We need to investigate another time for this event. Also, the event tends to be a very long day. For 2015 we've decided to eliminate dinner in favor of a substantial lunch followed by a short cocktail party with prizes at the end of the day. A survey was distributed to all attendees via email to confirm these changes and select an alternate time of year for this event. We will report back our findings in the next blog.
