Charity Choice Criteria Policy

Charity Choice Criteria

Advocis Calgary is open to suggestions from our members regarding what Charity to support, and has established criteria for choosing any Charity we will support.  Charities for consideration should:

  • Have Local Impact –Charities impacting Southern Alberta (Red Deer South) will be considered.
  • Be Reputable – The Charity under consideration must be a legitimate, registered, tax exempt organization in good standing with CRA.
  • Be Transparent – The Charity under consideration must provide literature about their work as requested including publicly accessible reports and directors’ meeting minutes in order to determine what they do, how they manage their money and what their plans are in the future.

Recommendations for a new Charity may be made to an Advocis Calgary Board member for consideration.  The Board will conduct appropriate research into the Charitable Organization to ensure it meets the above criteria.  The research may include in-person interviews, tour of the organization’s facilities, interview, requests for annual reports, program data, etc.

Final selection of the new Charity will be made by the Advocis Calgary’s Executive Committee at the November Committee meeting prior to the end of the current Charity’s Term of Support.  Charities are selected for a two year period based on a calendar year.  An announcement will be made to Advocis members at the Annual Advocis Calgary Christmas Luncheon of the following year’s selected Charity.

Representatives from the chosen Charity will be invited to participate in various Advocis Calgary social events through the year.  Money raised on behalf of the Charity will be payable by cheque and a tax receipt will be requested.  The presentation of the donation will be made at the Annual Advocis Calgary Christmas Luncheon.
